China Panda, China, 1981

"Only about a thousand pandas remain in the high bamboo forests of southwest China, a small corner of their prehistoric range. ... Scientists study the enigmatic creatures, which are both bear- and raccoon-like but may belong to neither family. By finding answers to such questions as how far pandas roam and how much bamboo they need to eat, the Chinese and the World Wildlife Fund hope to save the panda from extinction."
