Nile River Overlook, Abu Simbel, Egypt, 1998

Photo: Nile River Overlook
The temple of Ramses II (far right) at Abu Simbel overlooks the Nile River. Two days of the year sunlight pierces the entrance at dawn. Ancient engineers oriented the temple to ensure this occurrence.

(Photographed on assignment for, but not published in, "Into an Antique Land: Egypt's Greatest Hits," March 1999, National Geographic Traveler magazine)
