Yellow Owl, United States, 1900s

At the time of this photograph of Yellow Owl, fewer than 300 people of his tribe existed on the Mandan Indian reservation near Fort Berthold, North Dakota. Mandan numbers were decimated by smallpox brought by white traders in the 1830s.
