After a fierce and bloody battle with more than twenty hyenas just moments ago, a wounded lioness is caught in a moment of loss. Hyenas vastly outnumber lions in the Ngorongoro Crater. In a reversal of the laws of Africa's savannas, the lions of the crater area must constantly fight for survival against aggressive hyena packs. Visibly bonier than their cousins on the Serengeti, and surrounded by flies, this lioness is bleeding from the shoulder from a bite wound and silently skulking away into the dusk, to fight another day.

Location: Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania
