This specimen of Hyloscirtus psarolaimus, was found on 23rd of July 2009 near Cuellaje, Ecuador and was the only living specimen of this species known to science. Due to it's declining natural habitat, It now lives in the "balsa de los sapos", spanish for life raft of the frogs at the Catholic Univeristy of Quito. Here scienitists work to catalogue the DNA of endangered species and attempt to breed with the specimen they encounter in the wild. The ultimate goal of the "life raft" is to be able to revitalize lost or declining populations of amphibian species.
