Kawangware, located approximately 15 km from Nairobi’s centre, is one of the city’s fastest growing and impoverished slums. Home to hundreds of thousands, most of Kawangware’s residents live on less than $1 US per day. Mary, pictured here, lives with her mother and brother in a single room tin home, for which the monthly rent is 2,000 Kenyan shillings, equivalent to roughly $23 US. Mary is a student of KITO International, a local grassroots organization that aims to improve the economic circumstance of Kawangware street youth through employment, education and business incubation.
