After being scrapped as a freight tunnel, the Freedom Tunnel became a locus for graffiti artists and served as a refuge for many of New York’s homeless. Residents of the tunnel, often referred to as "mole people", were evicted and left straggling to find new homes after the tunnel was reopened by Amtrak in 1991. Here a man gazes into his reflection in one of the numerous tunnel puddles.
