Ritual of Benediga

The Benediga is a ritual that is only found in Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Italy. When a couple marries launches more than 50 kg of candies and "confetti" from a balcony. The ceremony lasts about 20-30 minutes and has uncertain origins. Certainly it symbolizes wishes of prosperity but also offers other curious points of reflection. People below the balcony at first raise their hands to the sky asking candies, then bend to the ground to pick them up. The repetition of this movement resembles an adoration for the new family, almost a rite of pagan religion.
