Resurrection of a Ghost

In the 1960s the Mexican government commissioned the construction of the Malpaso hydroelectric dam across the Grijalva River, in the Zoque region of northwestern Chiapas. The construction of the dam flooded hectares of rainforest, farmland, various towns and villages, and archeological sites, resulting in the relocation of many indigenous people. Amongst the towns that were inundated included the former town of Quechula, site of the Monastery of Santiago (or the Ghost, as I refer to it).

Location: Tecpat√°n, Chiapas-Mexico
