Aztec Dance

Photograph by Aydin Palabiyikoglu, Your Shot

This Month in Photo of the Day: Your Photos

A performer in an Aztec ritual dance during a Día de los Muertos celebration in Los Angeles

(This photo and caption were submitted to Your Shot.)

What Makes This a Photo of the Day? I like that the photographer chose to go tight on the dancer rather than show the wider scene. The effect is that it becomes not so much about the movement of the dance but the energy of the dancer, which is interesting. —Alexa Keefe, Photo of the Day editor

Aztecs' soul could not be explained in a better way. Awesome shot, perfect timing.

Looks like the perfect connection between her and the photographers priority of abstracting the background in favor of the more serious views and movements of life and/or death. Her life, beauty, make up, the dance all become secondary to their focus which meet in a perfect way. Just beautiful. I'd like to paint it.

In this tight shot I can see a lot of past history and the dancer looking to the future, great composition and colour
