Basketball Court, Hong Kong

Photograph by Brian Yen, Your Shot

This Month in Photo of the Day: The Stories Behind Your Shots

Your Shot contributor Brian Yen calls it his "weekly photography fix": the uninterrupted hour and a half after he drops his daughter off at her ballet lesson, which he spends shooting pictures in the school's neighborhood. "I had encountered this scene in the past, but always with many players on the court," he says of this image, shot from a pedestrian overpass above Garden Road in Hong Kong. "But this time, near the end of my walk, I saw this lone player shooting hoops. The contrast with the Friday evening rush hour traffic was immediately obvious."

Check out the bold new look and feel of Your Shot, where you can share photos, take part in assignments, lend your voice to stories, and connect with fellow photographers from around the globe.

Our lives are in a constant flux, you have only a moment to moment to live. It is only camera that can help us to freeze that single moment, as short as 1/1000 second sometimes for us to recollect or others to share. Thank you whoever invented the first camera.

I love the contrast of the different time perceptions. Enlightening!

Really cool how it's solitude on one side and chaos on the other. Well done.

Great photo. Love those playgrounds in Hong Kong, playing football and others sports next to skyscrapers.

Yes, cool, indeed. Can imagine urban infrastructure in Taiwan.

This image is great. The balance between the lines of light from the traffic and the emptiness of the court is amazing. This one really grabs you. I can't say enough about this image.

Just looking at a snapshot in time, it is possible to tell the basketball player has skill.

Ditto the photographer.

This image was rightly called "Time out". Great execution ! The use of an appropriate shutter speed was of paramount importance here, because the player turned out to be fairly static, whereas in the same frame we can see light trails of the busy traffic. Feels like two different photos clubbed into one.
