The Pilgrim Bride

Photograph by Shahnewaz Karim, National Geographic Your Shot

"A newlywed bride waits for her husband before boarding the special train in Kamlapur Railway Station in Dhaka, Bangladesh," writes Your Shot contributor Shahnewaz Karim of this picture chosen for publication in the Spontaneous Adventure assignment. "The mehendi in her hand is still showing as the light seeps through the roof and the people 'seated' there for the journey. This pilgrimage home is to enjoy the Eid festival with family."

This photo and caption were submitted to Your Shot. Check out the new and improved website, where you can share photos, take part in assignments, lend your voice to stories, and connect with fellow photographers from around the globe.

Effectively highlights an individual against a backdrop of the many.... and has a sense of something impending about it. Great image.

The light is perfect with composition but the bride's face looked so sad...I hope that she will be happy with her marriage.

this is one of my favorite photos on earth. It is beyond description. Everything looks perfect to me. Story telling, composition, color, light, and so on. Love this photo.

Her concerned expression make me feel sad. Hope she had a good marriage.

The filtered light is what captured my attention next to the bride and the colour of her dress. Striking.

Great !! Most of the people in Bangladesh are living under poverty but it doesn't impact on their happiness.

They always expecting a new hope.... this picture is such a great example.....

The composition of the photo is excellent, but what really gets me about the photo are the beams of light seeping through and above the small crowd on top of the train.  The best part of the photo

I sure wouldn't want my bride riding that train. It is a great shot.

What an elegant and beautiful shot.  The brides gown is as vibrant as she is stunningly beautiful.  The lighting streaming through people sitting atop the train is brilliant!  Such an incredible shot!  Great Work!

Amazing image. Not only is there clarity and sharpness in the bride, but there's movement and action in the background that enhances the sense of time. The light is beautiful. Great capture.

Added: Also, there is a great story in the image that communicates a real message to viewers.

Wow. Great photo with the sun shining through and the bride standing out so well. What a horrible way to travel. I think I would prefer the roof to being jammed inside with the all those people. I wonder how many people fall off.

The bride either looks very sad or she's just nervous. Anyhow I suppose it's again one of those fixed marriages.

Is it just me or does the bride look not too happy?

@cost nicolas J'ai eu exactement la même impression: "pas un regard se porte sur la futur mariée "

Culturel ou Retouche?  Ca reste quand même une très belle photo, tout y est....
