Seal of Disapproval

Photograph by Mariusz Potocki, National Geographic Your Shot

"Crabeater seals (Lobodon carcinophagus) are one of the most curious animals [I've been] fortunate to work with," writes Mariusz Potocki, a member of our Your Shot community. "When the gulf waters freeze over during the Antarctic winter, they hunt for the krill that live beneath the ice surface. These curious and happy seals gather around airholes, which they use to take in air after hunting or playing underwater. Scuba diving in a place like that is a wonderful and exciting adventure."

congratulations mariusz, an excellent + beautiful photo.

i'm also curious as to know why you titled the photo seal of disapproval - was the seal expressing that as you where invading their space?

Underwater shots that show the surface from below are quite interesting. I've taken a few myself and they're some of my favorites. Well done.

A great picture, that once again has the blue image, that is so good to look at. The photographer definately had  a happy time with these animals. And 'catching' them in their natural habitat was I'm sure very rewarding. Enjoyed the picture very much.  j.e.s.

Great clear crisp photo. We have two seals here on our beach in Jeffreys Bay who come every year to rest for a couple of months over the December/January period and to be able to get up so close and study them is really a blessing as they are such lovely animals.
