Of Silhouettes and Pirouettes

Photograph by Tanya Kirnishi, National Geographic Your Shot

Your Shot contributor Tanya Kirnishi captured the shadow of a ballerina friend at Montreal's Palais des Congrès, a meeting and convention center known for its multicolored facade. "We had been exploring the neighborhood, and when we saw the colored light falling on the ground, we wanted to experiment a little," Kirnishi says.

"There is something very magical and playful about the colors, so [ballet] poses seemed like a natural fit, equally beautiful and mysterious. I wanted only the hint of my friend's body in the frame of the shot so that the focus could be on her shadow. This way, the shadow and the lights were almost part of another world, playing off of each other."

Lovely colors and the dancing shadow! Fabulous harmony of colors and shadow. The red of foot where the body and shadow meet is gorgeous

The second i saw the picture i knew where it was taken. In fact i did similar picture at the "Palais des Congrès" but i was alone and no ballerina was dancing around at the time. So my pics was interesting but not oustanding. Next time i will put the camera on the tripod and dance my self may be. My shadow might do the trick even if i'm not a dancer.

......And the green, and the pink, and the yellow, with the shadow on the oblong tiles form a picture that is different, to be looked at,  and enjoyed a whole heap. The colors are exciting, as are her legs in the red tights. I don't know about dimensions etc; but I do know what a good picture is. j.e.s.

There are many appealing aspects about this photo.  One is the juxtaposition between the orientation of the geometric shapes of the coloured glass and window frame shadows, and the different orientation of the long rectangles of the floor tiles.  The ballerina's shadow is positioned so well in the composition, and the highlight of sunlight on her red leotards nicely balances the red light on the floor from the tinted window.  The collaboration between photographer and subject to set up the image bespeaks a joyful experience, and the association with the fine art of dance is also appealing.  The title has a poetic rhyme too.

Congratulations to you, Tanya, on having one of your photos selected for the Photo of the Day, and another chosen for the Daily Dozen, both on the same day!
