Fair, India

Photograph by Abhishek Nandy, Your Shot

This Month in Photo of the Day: Your Shots

This was shot at a local fair in Jamshedpur, India. This is a structure for a bike show. The structure, the canopy, and the sunlight together made a unique pattern.

What Makes This a Photo of the Day? The angle, composition, and person included for scale make this a good shot. The light illuminating the canopy, shining through the slats, and casting the intricate shadow make it an exceptional one. —Alexa Keefe, Photo of the Day editor

I agree with the editor that the person helps this photo. Without him one wouldn't be able to tell how immense this tent is. Well done.

I hope the structure was developed by architectures and civil engineers. If they need more of these send bright students to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY in the USA.

Similar to an event in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, "Pasar Malem" in Sekaten Event. There is Tongstand, a stage for motorcycle show. "Pasar Malem" in Sekaten event is a traditional event in Yogyakarta, it will be started on Dec, 5th 2013 for one month. If some of you wanna go here, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, don't forget to come to "Pasar Malem" in Sekaten event. :)

I may be alone on this, but when I think of India I think of Ramanujan - a mathematician of the early 20th century.  This is a photo that is a mathematician's delight.  The beauty in this photo comes from the Euclidean geometrical shapes that are in every detail.  There are parabolas hiding in the shadows of the cloth, asymptotes in the conical sections and ovals in the skyline.

Abhishek Nandy has been brave in this photo to simplify his choices of colours to brown and orange.  But like a tightrope walker high above the earth, he has pulled this stunt off.  Bravo.

Before reading the photographer's account, I wondered what was the function of this peculiar structure.  Having been informed, it seemed a pretty flimsy structure to support motorbikes racing around the walls, if indeed that's what happens during the bike show.

Staring at that lovely orange canopy, my eye experiences the optical illusion that it is slowly rotating counterclockwise.

The limited colour palette contributes to the photo's impact.
