Fortuna Bay, Falkland Islands, 1998
Photograph by Maria Stenzel
Fortuna Bay sits between craggy peaks and glaciers on South Georgia. In 1916 Ernest Shackleton and his men trekked by this stretch of water toward the island's whaling stations, where they found salvation after being stranded in Antarctica for nearly two years.
(Photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Shackleton: Epic of Survival," November 1998, National Geographic magazine)
