Giant Anteater, Brazil

Photograph by Gerardo Ceballos, Your Shot

This Month in Photo of the Day: The Stories Behind Your Shots

I took this shot of a giant anteater in the Fazenda Barranco Alto, a 30,000-acre cattle ranch and wildlife preserve in the Pantanal of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. I had been looking for animals all day long, driving and walking through grasslands and forest patches that surround the endless lakes dotting the landscape of this region. During the day I had seen other giant anteaters, a giant otter, white-lipped peccaries, and many other interesting mammals. As the sun was setting, I saw a dark shadow on the shore of one of the lakes. I took my camera and walked slowly toward that moving shadow. With great surprise I found out that it was a giant anteater. I took the photo with a flash against the fading daylight. It was a memorable moment that was caught in my photo. —Gerardo Ceballos

Lovely sunset in the background. Anteaters are very strange looking. Great job Gerardo.

Incredible photo, but am I the only one that could have sworn he's seen this image on photo of the day before?

There's something you don't see everyday.  At least not in Oregon.  Great shot!

Wonderful picture. I just hope that this creature doesn't end up as menu item in China.

Bravo, Gerardo Bravo. What an absolutely beautiful photo, the lighting, the colors, the subject matter, the symmetry and balance, just wonderful. Not to mention the clarity, I mean the little ripple on the water from a drop that fell from his nose, wicked cool. Wicked.

@John Spencer Hey John, I've seen every photo of the day for about three years, and I have not seen this one before. Perhaps before I've been following this site they showed it but not since.
