Grey Reef Shark, Marshall Islands, 1998
Photograph by William R. Curtsinger
"'They [gray reef sharks] were so aggressive,' says [photographer] Curtsinger, 'that I used my camera as a shield to keep them from sticking their heads in the cage.' And they appeared in great numbers too, often cruising around the boat as soon as the team dropped anchor. 'They're at the top of the food chain, and they looked healthy,' says Curtsinger. 'That's good.'"
