Kyrgyz Yurt, Afghanistan

Photograph by Mattieu Paley, National Geographic

This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine Features

Blanket-draped yaks hunker down outside a young Kyrgyz couple's yurt on the eve of a summer trading journey. Made of interlaced poles covered with felt, these portable homes are packed up and reassembled for seasonal migration. Wooden doors are imported to the treeless plateau from lower altitudes.

Huh? Is it just me or has anyone noticed that a yurt's door is glassed and is blurred for privacy?

I like the background of this picture. How far is it to the next town?

I love the mountains in the background. They have so much color. I also love how the moon looks very bright.

I like that he took the picture when the sun was out but  the stars are still shining.  And the mountains in the background

@paolo borlin  i cannot agree more... and in particular the article from 1950.  THANK YOU nat geo for adding that link.   amazing how some things change so dramatically and how the essence of somethings almost never change.
