Tree Canopy, Berlin

Photograph by Kevin Connolly

This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Photo Contest Images

While studying in Florence, Italy, I went on a trip throughout Europe. The first stop was in Berlin, Germany, where we rented bikes and rode throughout the city. While visiting the Jewish Museum I stood under a group of trees and noticed the great interaction of handlike branches with the light coming through the canopy of leaves.

Beautiful capture. Black & white version emphasized the trees.

Many times black and white( and yes grey too) is much more intense and eye catching to look at. This shot proves the point. Its beautiful, really beautiful. Joy Saldanha.

Beautiful photo! Amazing and magic that I can see vivid colour of the leaves in spite of the photo being black and white...!

The colours of maple leaves in autumn are vibrant and vivid.   The mood within the Jewish Museum is sombre and respectful.  The choice of black and white for this shot is perfect.  It is as if the colours have been bled from the leaves in deference to the lives that were cut short by the holocaust.

Sometimes the whole context of a photo needs to be considered.  In this case the museum is the unseen object that casts a long shadow over the photo.  This fact elevates this photo from a good shot to a great shot.  It is a subtle and intelligent photo.  Congratulations Mr Connolly on photo of the day.

The vertical symmetry makes for a pleasing composition and the choice of B&W enhances the image.

The bowl-like structure of the tree branches makes it appear, particularly in the central tree, like the leaves are contained in a transparent orb.

Ahhh trees, ...true natural beauty.       Doesn't matter if it's a black and white photograph or color, just naturally beautiful!             Great photograph Mr. Connolly.
