Lightning, New Mexico

Photograph by Carsten Peter, National Geographic

This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature and Weather Photos

A ground fire ignited by a lightning storm near Elephant Butte, New Mexico, paints the horizon with brown smoke. At right, another cloud-to-ground strike flashes through a shaft of rain.

This picture is amazing! How did the photographer get a perfect picture of lightning? The lightning is so bright andyou can see it very clearly.I like how the background looks foggy. Or is it raining?

You can see the lighting in the clouds. On half of the sky you can see rain. On the other half there is no rain.

This picture is AMAZING. My favorite part is how the lightning is shooting out of his self. Also like how the lightning is so bright instead of dim.

It is a perfect shot. With the lighting touching the ground, and all the little branches on the lightning bolt make it look like a tree.  Do they have storms like this natraul?
