Kalaripayattu Fighters, India

Photograph by Armand Poblete, Your Shot

This Month in Photo of the Day: The Stories Behind Your Shots

I found out that there was an evening show on the ancient art of Kalaripayattu at Punarjani Traditional Village, less than a few blocks from my hotel in Munnar, India. Being an avid fan of martial arts, it immediately piqued my interest. I had just gotten a steal of a deal on a National Geographic camera strap on eBay, and while I was in line, the ticket master noticed it and dragged me to the front of the line. So I paid and followed him to the VIP seating, perfect for getting the shot!

First I observed the light and the action of the fighters. The dimly lit arena just gave it that feel of an '80s kung fu poster, and I wanted to keep it that way. After a few camera adjustments and a few hundred missed shots I finally captured the two fighters in midair. —Armand Poblete

I like what appears to be a Tip Box, maybe I am wrong but that is an amusing detail if it is.

Amazing photo! Everything in this photo makes it perfect...the smoke stains on the wall, the extra weapons in the background, the peaceful shadow on the floor, the blurring sword ready to strike, the look of determination on the fighters face! Wonderful! Lucky you had that strap to get you into the VIP section. Great job!!

That is a really cool picture, the sports in India look much more violent. Is that a very popular sport there?

This is an extraordinary shot of the to performers and I must say that you capturing them in midair just made it amazing, also I agree about how the lighting makes the shot even more amazing.

AMAZING photo. favorite part is how they are in the air fighting instead of on the ground. I wonder how they can stay in the air for so long?

For some reason, this photo reminds me of ninja's. The fighters just need black jumpsuits.

@journee journee I think the swords are real, and hopefully they aren't fighting till death. That would be scary.
