Milky Way, New Zealand

Photograph by Stefan Mutch, My Shot

This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature and Weather Photos

This was taken on the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin, New Zealand. I was hoping to capture some aurora activity. There was no aurora that night, but there was high humidity, so the light from the city was reflected over the entire sky, even though we were well away from the city. Instead of the usual gold or orange glow, the sky took on a red hue that was clearly visible to the naked eye.

There's something wrong in this beautiful picture. The stars reflected in the water leave a trail due to the long exposure while those in the sky are fixed points...

If you need a renter let me know! Must of been a fairly long exposure. Love the red!

The light from the city on the horizon makes it look like there's a fire burning and the reflection in the water makes me think of falling stars. This is a beautiful photo.

Rather than "like" and Reply" to everyone I would like to say a big thankyou to everyone who has taken the time to comment or even just look at this photo, the kind remarks make it all worth while. cheers Stefan

There are so many things that I love, like how the water reflects the orange/red color of the sky making it seem like endless space and how some of the stars reflect on the water making the house look like it's floating in space. In other words this is just STUNNING!

Oh my gosh, this photo is awesome! It almost looks like it's photo-shopped! Is the house just floating there? I absoulutely love the how many stars you can see! Just think of all the galaxies there could be out there! The color of the sky is cool too.

This is a COOL photo! I like the way that there are so many stars . The reflection in the water makes it look like there are twice as many stars. I wonder why we didn't see a meteor shower?

This is a nice photo, but it's so sad that light and air pollution has alter our world so much. And, as we all know, it's not just air and light pollution that's drastically changing our world.

Interesting to see the Milky Way shoot straight up from the horizon.

Much different view than what we get on this side of the world! :)
