Mount Baker Geochemist, Washington, 1997
Photograph by James C. Richardson
"Taking his work to extremes, USGS [United States Geological Survey] geochemist Robert Symonds collects magma-heated steam in icy Sherman Crater. Mostly water from rain and snow, the steam also holds gases such as carbon dioxide. A change in the mix of components often signals a shift in volcanic activity."
