Snowy Owl, Long Island

Photograph by David Dillhoff, Your Shot

This Month in Photo of the Day: Animal Pictures

Not too far from the daily "rush hour" campaign one can visit one of nature's most special environments—Jones Beach, New York, the west end. It's a perfect host for various bird of prey species throughout the four seasons. Each winter hundreds of birders and photographers travel in search of the snowy owl.

If this is a sage bird, then this must be a thymely shot, no wonder it is an endangered species!

@Once again  Hey once7, I love your new moniker, even more than your new avatar. I just wanted to let you know that that's a male snowy, females have black spots on their breast. Have you figured out who I am, or was, my old friend?

@Barney Blasterson Just in case you're not the only one finding they can't change the picture, I thought I'd add a quick note. The maximum upload size for these photos is 1 MB, so if it's not uploading correctly, it may just be over the limit. Let me know if this doesn't work! We definitely want to make sure everyone can use their favorite pictures.

@water bird @Barney Blasterson  That might be because that photo was an accident. I meant to choose the photo next to it (a barn owl) in my files and then try as I might, I was unable to change it. I might try again in the near future but I'm not to computer savvy. Or should I just go back to the cedar waxwing photo? ahhh, who cares.

@Barney Blasterson i had a little  inkling that  B.B was C.W.W with your  comment for the photo with the horses/dog iceland, but your choice for a landscape photo for your  profile  photo threw me completely  off track :-)  .

@water bird @Barney Blasterson @Once again  Lol, Hey water bird, I wish I could help you with your spots, but.  I missed you guys, it was hard looking in from the outside. I was waiting for you to comment, so I could reply and see if you knew who I was. But to tell the truth, I knew you would figure it out right away. It's nice to hear from you, and nice to be back.
