Photo: Piegan Indian

Piegan Indian, Montana, 1900s

Photograph by Edward S. Curtis

A Piegan Indian poses in full warrior dress.

In summer, the plains of northern Montana are lush and green, the grass blown flat by winds fragrant with sage and sweetgrass. Gentle hills roll east and north, and to the west are the sudden crags of the Rockies. The home of the southern Piegan Indians lies in these plains and foothills just east of Glacier National Park. Their reservation extends north along the Rockies from the ragged town of Browning, past the long lake at St. Mary's and up to the Canadian border.
