Polar Bear Cubs, Hudson Bay, Canada, 1996
Photograph by Flip Nicklin
"While most [polar bear] females deliver twins [like these two], triplets aren't uncommon at Hudson Bay. At birth the cubs weigh little more than a pound [half a kilogram], with hair so fine it's nearly invisible." (Photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Polar Bears," January 1998, National Geographic magazine)
