Reed Frog, Botswana

Photograph by Petra Warner, My Shot

This Month in Photo of the Day: Your Photos

A reed frog blending in with a water lily awaits its meal of flies in Botswana.

(This photo and caption were submitted to My Shot.)

What Makes This a Photo of the Day? I have seen many tightly composed shots of creatures on flowers, quite often beautiful and well done. What I love about this one, though, is the presence of the flies. They add an element of grit to an otherwise pristine-looking scene. Here, it’s not only about capturing the creature on the flower but also conveying the broader environment—in this case, the next meal. —Alexa Keefe, Photo of the Day editor

I love this shot, not just for my love of lotus flowers and of frogs, but mainly because it is more of a 'real life' shot of nature, not sugarcoated with the special effects of photoshop.  Love the flies and the darkened background frames your main subject matter beautifully.  Well done, and congrats!

My picture in my profile looks like that because there is an apple with an ant who walk over there..nice shoot, the frog camouflages very well in this flower!..lovely

Petra, your little frog looks so absolutely "part" of the flower.  The flying creatures really give a perspective to "Little Frog" being pretty tiny itself.   The light so highlights that awesomely beautiful golden yellow color in the flower.  I know Little Frog is interested in his next meal (surrounded by bug meals), but there is a sweet feeling of tranquility, too.  Love your image!  Will visit your gallery! :-)

The frog couldn't have chosen a better place indeed, the best of lodging and free food at hand. Truly an outstanding image, Petra Warner. Well done!
