Rooftop Garden, Manhattan

Photograph by Diane Cook and Len Jenshel, National Geographic

This Month in Photo of the Day: City Pictures

New York's Empire State Building gleams in the windows of an architectural firm in this photo from a May 2009 National Geographic story on living roofs. Blossoming in cities around the world, overhead gardens like this one take advantage of acres of potential green space.

I love the blend of the flowers...such different personalities. Color, texture, and shape all blending into one hunk of popping nature. I also really like how the outside buildings are slightly blurred-to signify the hussle and bussle of city life. Really nice shot, Diane and Len!

To see that in the middle of the concrete jungle is very refreshing and makes this a very nice photo.

Curious as to why the buildings appear to be in motion....beautiful respite from the bustling city.

This sure beats looking at the concrete of the roof or whatever the roof is made of, and the buildings reflecting off the windows have a nice sienna color.
