Snowy Landscape, Japan

Photograph by Teruo Araya, Your Shot

This Month in Photo of the Day: Your Shots

Landscapes become like paintings occasionally. Taken at Lake Ikari, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan.

What Makes This a Photo of the Day? It is precisely the painterly quality of this photograph that attracted me. The trees and melting snow are like brushstrokes. Lovely. —Alexa Keefe, Photo of the Day editor

Reminiscent of a Chinese ink painting. The tone for its various layers of darkness is excellent.Congratulations Teruo Araya

Though a stunning photo this kind of makes me sad. I suppose it's because winter is coming.

It's like several islands or collages of "land". And speaking of island there must be a details within them.

How I wish to have such landscape in my country. it would have become a shrine and a money spinning business for others.

I seem to remember being able to download these "photos of the day" at a higher resolution. Is that no longer possible? This would make a perfect desktop wallpaper!

The contrast of black and white is intense. A very powerful medium. Two colors without distractions.

I wonder if this is done in the darkroom.  Exposed the paper, and then paint developer onto the paper to create this image.  It is wildly over-exposed also, which is what gives it that stark dark, and blown out white effect.

Vegetation, dormant, dark in tone

Shallow water, frozen ice

A floating landscape in the snow void.

@Kristen Ressler

That's probably the way YOU would do it as you know so much about it. "Widely Over-Exposed"?? Not Really. It's a Beautiful Picture! PERIOD!
