Beirut, Lebanon

Photograph by Thomas J. Abercrombie, National Geographic

This Month in Photo of the Day: City Pictures

This photograph of a bustling street scene ran in the April 1958 issue of National Geographic in a story by Thomas J. Abercrombie about "Young-old Lebanon." The caption read, in part: "For variety, few cities can match Lebanon's bustling capital. Part Christian, part Moslem, Beirut combines East and West, ancient and modern. Contrasts stand out vividly in street scenes such as this on the Rue Georges Picot. … A sign over the blouse shop shows the cedar, Lebanon's national symbol. The market-bound shepherd in Near Eastern headdress and Western jacket icily ignores the latest European fashions."

If only we could turn back the clock to that time having learned from our mistakes...

Still a wonderful picture. Thank you

Hilarious! The ladies have to step off the sidewalk to avoid the sheep. I could be wrong but the guy on the right looks like he's ticked off the sheep are coming.

i am so happy that I am able to remember scenes like these.  I grew up in Lebanon in the 50's and 60's, and it was a fantastic place to live.  I'll bet anything that those ladies crossing the street have a bottle of 4711 Eau de Cologne in their bags.  It seemed all ladies did in those days!

It seems the sheep on the street is a surprise for passers. But I want to be over there to feel that mix of real life. Amazing.
