Surfer, Australia

Photograph by Alex Coppel, My Shot

This Month in Photo of the Day: The Stories Behind Your Shots

During my summer holidays I spend a few weeks at a beach house on the South Coast of New South Wales in Australia. I am a professional photographer but have a real love affair with underwater imagery, so I look forward to this time of year. Instead of shooting the surfers above the water on the waves I would allow them to fly past me underwater, just to see them passing through the wave as it breaks. Sometimes they come a little too close … —Alex Coppel

Thanks for risking injury to get awesome photos like this Alex. Kind of ghostly and like a fossil at the same time. Wonderful!

Where I live, there are petroglyphs created by ancient Hawaiians. Your timeless photo reminds me of them. Beautiful.

what a breathtaking photo! one can just hear the surfer "cutting " the water... akin to a shark.  i've never associated the two together , but with this imagary , plus  the choice of b&w which i feel adds mystery to the photo, brought an instant association for me!  Now whenever i will see a surfer in action or a classic surfing photo, i will in my subconcious also add STEALTH as an adjective to all the other ones that commonly come to mind, thanks to this photo of Alex's.
