Photographer: Ami Vitale

Ami Vitale, best known for her international news and cultural documentation, has been praised as a humane and empathetic storyteller. She has received recognition for her work from World Press Photo, the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), International Photos of the Year, Photo District News, and the Society of American Travel Writers, among others.

Vitale has been awarded many grants, including the first-ever Inge Morath Award by Magnum Photos, the Canon Female Photojournalist Award for her work in Kashmir, and the Alexia Foundation for World Peace grant.

Vitale's coverage of events in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa have appeared in magazines around the world, including GEO, Newsweek, Time, Smithsonian, The Guardian, The Telegraph Sunday Magazine, the New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Le Figaro and others. Her work has been exhibited in France, Poland, and New York.

Vitale has covered many subjects for National Geographic publications, including Kashmir for National Geographic Traveler magazine and elephant-human relations, snow leopards, and man-eating lions for National Geographic Adventure magazine.

Vitale attended the University of North Carolina before getting her start at the Associated Press as a picture editor in New York and Washington, D.C. She has since lived and worked all over the world. She is now based in New Delhi, India.
