Becky Hale

Becky Hale graduated from Wheaton College in Massachusetts in 1999 with a B.A. in literature and creative writing. She became interested in photography after working on a mixed media project that blended photography and creative writing.

She moved to Washington, D.C. in 1999 to start a job with National Geographic as an assistant in the photographic department. Four years later, she began working as an in-house studio photographer. She works on projects for a wide range of departments, including National Geographic Traveler, Communications, Marketing, National Geographic Kids, Mission Programs, and National Geographic magazine. She shoots everything from events to portraits.

Most of Hale's work takes place in the studio at the National Geographic Society. Recent projects have included illustrating articles about the dwindling number of redheads being born, the treatment of maternity and paternity leave around the world, and a skull sample from an Inca gunshot victim.

Fieldwork has taken Hale on assignment to northern Wisconsin, where she shot aerials from an ultralight for a National Geographic Television Wild Chronicles show on whooping crane migration. In 2006 an assignment with National Geographic Enterprises took her to Chile, where she photographed the launch of the National Geographic Endeavor expedition cruise ship.
