Photographer: Justin Guariglia

Justin Guariglia is an award-winning location photographer. Now based in New York, he has photographed in more than 50 countries worldwide, focusing on Asia, Europe, and the Americas. He has lived in Venice, Italy, Beijing, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Tokyo.

Guariglia moved to Asia at age 21 to learn Mandarin Chinese in Beijing, where he eventually taught himself photography as an excuse to explore the city. Returning to the United States briefly, he landed an internship at Magnum Photos in New York, where he was first exposed to the documentary world. Encouraged by a Magnum photographer to "get out of the office and back onto the street," he returned to Asia in 1998, settled in Hong Kong, and began working on freelance commissions for National Geographic Traveler, Smithsonian, and Newsweek to help pay for his "Personal Journeys" projects around Asia, in which he photographed landscapes and cityscapes.

Named one of the "top 30 young photographers under 30" by Photo District News, Guariglia was also nominated for the Young Photographer of the Year award by the International Center of Photography in New York. In 2003 his reportage work won two Pictures of the Year awards and an Ozzie gold award.

A contributor to more than 50 publications worldwide, Guariglia works regularly on assignment for Fortune, the New York Times, and other publications. He is also a contributing editor for National Geographic Traveler. His advertising work has won numerous regional awards.
