The 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, were marred by disqualifications over performance-enhancing drug use. Canadian Ben Johnson, seen here edging out American Carl Lewis in the 100-meter run, was one of ten athletes banned from the games for failing drug tests.
These games marked the first time professional athletes were permitted to compete. A 1986 International Olympic Committee ruling overturned the amateurs-only rule and left the decision on professional athletes to the international governing bodies of each sport.
Standouts at the Seoul games included American runners Florence Griffith Joyner and Jackie Joyner-Kersee and American diver Greg Louganis, who repeated his sweep. Famed Soviet Greco-Roman wrestler Aleksandr Kareline also won his first gold.
