At Highgrove, Prince Charles's estate in Gloucestershire, the prince's award-winning chickens have their prize ribbons displayed on the henhouse door. The chickens win awards for their eggs, which the prince, who is patron of the Poultry Association, displays at county shows. The prince often feeds the chickens himself, first thing in the morning, in his dressing gown. Photograph and text by Catherine Karnow
